This may or may not be applicable, but there's some research on "do not
feed" signs in zoos. Basically, if you explain to visitors WHY they
shouldn't feed the animals, they're less likely to do it. I guess demands
don't go over well with people trying to have a nice day.

Stephen Bitgood has done some work on this. You might try looking at
proceedings from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association conference. I
have a few short papers that I could send too.
