Michelle,

At our Museum of Frederick County History, we've had a demonstration garden
since 2001. It is a small plot adjacent to our formal garden and each year
it is has a theme that is related to the major temporary exhibit in the
museum. The plants we use are primarily heirlooms. Some of the past themes
were: victory garden, ersatz garden (to go with a Civil War exhibit), fiber
and dye garden (to go with a textile exhibit), Germanic garden (with plants
that come from German immigrants or bear Germanic names), and this year is a
"travel" garden that has plants that have places in their names such as
Boston Pickling Cucumber and California Bell Pepper.

At our house museum that we are still in the process of developing, we are
working on plans for a kitchen garden that will have plants grown in the
1820s.

Subject: Foodways programming

Hello all,

I'm working on a presentation about the contemporary interest in food and
sustainable agriculture and how museums are playing a part in reviving food
traditions. I'm looking for examples of museums, particularly history
museums, who have recently instituted a new food program or expanded an
existing one. Particular emphasis on heirloom plants, heritage breeds, and
regional food traditions and practices.

Thank you for any information you can offer on what museums are doing such
programming!
