of course you could just say all those people just broke in and were
standing behind you when you were watching it by your self!

<grin>

Hi. You'll need to get "public performance rights" to screen the films,
whether you choose to charge admission or not. The best place to start
is to call the production company that made the film or try one of the
bigger public performance licensing agents, like Swank Motion Pictures
(www.swank.com). Some offer limited public performance rights (for 1
viewing) or lifetime rights. If the film is in the public domain you
won't need rights (try looking on sites such as (www.retrofilm.com).

Even though our museum doesn't charge admission or sell refreshments,
most films we screen I've had to get performance rights for, even though
I make it clear we're showing the films for education purposes and we
are not charging admission. I have had some companies negotiate a lower
rate for us by making that clear though.

Hope this helps!

Subject: showing copyrighted films in museums

Hi Listers!

Does anyone know the "ins and outs" of showing copyrighted films in
museums? We'd like to offer a bi-weekly movie day for kids, where we
would show vintage children's classics (Shirley Temple films, and the
like). We do not have a set admission charge for the Historical Center
(rather, a suggested donation), and we would not charge to see the film.
We would attempt to raise modest funds from sales of snacks (popcorn and
beverages, for example), and through regular merchanise sales in the
Historical Center Store.

Would we be breaking copyright laws if we show the films publically,
without charging admission? Would this fall under fair use for
educational purposes if we incorporate some sort of short educational
program?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Lori
