*********Introduction to Grants for Preservation (Web-based
Training)*************

Two Distance Education Classes 2 pm - 4 pm
Dates: 1) Thursday, January 20, 2005, 2) Thursday, March 31, 2005 

Finding the funds for preservation projects in your institution can
often be a challenge. Fortunately there are outside sources of funding
available for preservation projects, if you know where to look and how
to apply for them. This two-hour distance education session is an
introduction to grant funding and the process of writing a grant
proposal. Topics covered include: types of grants, preparing to apply,
elements of a grant proposal, tips on grant administration, outcome
measurement, and a brief overview of the most common grants awarded to
archives, libraries, and other cultural institutions in the United
States. Emphasis will be placed on grant funding for preservation
projects. Small institutions are encouraged to participate. 

Cost is $100 SOLINET members ($90 early bird, $125 late registration),
$140 non-SOLINET members ($130 early bird, $165 late registration)


**********Preservation and Salvage of Audiovisual Materials (Web-based
Training)***********

Distance Education Class 2 pm - 4 pm
Date: Thursday, January 27, 2005 

This web-based training session is designed to inform staff in all types
of libraries, schools, and archives who manage audiovisual collections
about preventive preservation strategies and salvage options for these
special formats. In the event of a disaster, knowing the nature of AV
materials in the collection and which formats are salvageable will help
you set recovery priorities. Topics covered in the session: life
expectancies of common media, preservation methods for extending the
life of AV materials, disaster preparedness strategies, and elements of
response and recovery of these fragile media. 

Cost is $100 SOLINET members ($90 early bird, $125 late registration),
$140 non-SOLINET members ($130 early bird, $165 late registration)


***********Developing a Disaster Plan (Web-based
Training)****************

Distance Education Class 2 pm - 4 pm
Dates: 1) Thursdays, February 10, 2005, February 24, 2005, March 10,
2005

To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, institutions need
knowledgeable staff and written plans for dealing with emergency
situations so that fewer disasters occur and damage is minimized. This
web-based class is designed to support the work of an institution's
disaster planning committee. Homework assignments will require input and
support from a variety of staff members. Taught in 3 two-hour sessions
over the course of six weeks, it guides participants through the
development of a written disaster plan. The modules cover: establishment
of a planning structure, information gathering, including risk
assessment and resource list development, setting recovery priorities,
an overview of recovery procedures, plan development, and working with
disaster recovery vendors. 

Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $175 late registration),

**************Digital Imaging of Library Materials*****************

Thursday, February 10, 2005 Georgia Archives, Morrow, GA from 9 am - 5pm

This one-day class is designed for individuals with little or no
experience with digitization. Through demonstration and lecture,
participants will receive an introduction to scanning and editing image
files, and to the issues surrounding small to mid-sized library imaging
projects. Topics covered include: equipment requirements for library
digitization projects, equipment calibration, the difference between
digital imaging and optical character recognition, the "Scan Once"
methodology, file types and compression, basic scanner operation, basic
image adjustment and manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, OCR terminology
used in digitization projects, preservation of digital masters, file
naming and storage media.

Cost is $195 SOLINET members ($185 early bird, $220 late registration),
$235 non-SOLINET members ($225 early bird, $260 late registration). Any
institution in Georgia qualifies for the member rate.


***************Attack of the Giant Mold Spore************* 

Friday, February 11, 2005 at Alabama Public Library Service, Montgomery,
AL from 9 am - 4 pm 

Mold is a constant threat to collections, particularly in climates with
high heat and humidity. This full day class focuses on identifying mold,
the types of damage it causes to collection materials and techniques for
safe mold removal and cleaning. Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of the
Chicora Foundation, is the instructor for this session.

************Introduction to Preservation & Collections
Care****************

Thursday, February 17, 2005 at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga,
from 9 am to 4 pm

In these days of dwindling dollars and increasing demands, the
importance of preserving a library's resources has never been more
crucial. The life expectancy of a library's collection can be extended
substantially, and inexpensively, by applying basic, common-sense
preservation principles to current, ongoing activities. This session
will outline the features of a wellness program, demonstrating how all
library staff has a role to play in preserving the collection. It
emphasizes preventive measures and includes information on the elements
of a comprehensive preservation program, the nature of library
materials, and the mechanisms of deterioration. Discussions will also
cover proper care and handling practices, stack maintenance, staff and
user education, and library binding.

Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at Alabama Public Library Service,
Montgomery, AL from 9 am - 4 pm
 
To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, librarians and archivists must
be prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies.
This one-day class is designed for staff members responsible for, or
interested in, organizing and implementing institutional or cooperative
disaster preparedness and response procedures. In addition to in-depth
discussion on the disaster planning process, there will be
demonstrations of salvage techniques, including air-drying books,
packing out wet materials, separating and drying manuscripts, rinsing
books, and drying photographic materials.

*************Archives Preservation: Holdings Maintenance****************

Monday, March 7, 2005 at Historic New Orleans Collection, New Orleans,
LA from 9 am - 4 pm

During this class participants will: review the nature of materials
found in archives and the preservation problems they pose; review
factors that cause the deterioration of materials; environment,
chemical, and physical deterioration; outline the goals of a holdings
maintenance program and the procedures used in carrying out holdings
maintenance activities; learn to evaluate materials and supplies used
during holdings maintenance activities.

Cost is $145 SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $170 late registration),
$185 non-SOLINET members ($175 early bird, $210 late registration). Any
institution in Louisiana qualifies for the member rate.


***********Fundamentals of Book Repair*******************
 
Wednesday-Thursday, March 23-24, 2005 at Hollins University, Roanoke, VA
from 8:30 am - 5 pm
 
This two-day class is designed for staff members who perform book repair
in libraries and those who supervise repair units. The class teaches
simple, economical, preservation quality repairs for materials in
general, circulating and reference collections. The procedures covered
are hinge tightening, end sheet replacement, spine replacement, paper
mending, tip-ins and hinge-ins. The class will NOT cover techniques for
the repair of materials that are special, rare, or archival. 

Cost is $195 SOLINET members ($185 early bird, $220 late registration),
$235 non-SOLINET members ($225 early bird, $260 late registration). Any
institution within Virginia qualifies for the member rate.


*************Commercial Library Binding************************

Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at University of Kentucky at Lexington, KY from
9 am - 4 pm

This class provides the tools needed to make appropriate decisions that
balance preservation goals and financial realities. Modules include:
book structure & modern book manufacturing methods, an overview of
bindery operations, with a look at "leaf attachment" methods, analysis
of the benefits and disadvantages of various methods, discussion of
materials used, and explanations of the technical terms used by library
binders. Also incorporated is a discussion and practicum in which
attendees will make binding decisions to be applied within the library.
Guidelines will be given for immediately and cost-effectively upgrading
your binding program. Includes an overview of binding contracts and
discussions with a guest bindery representative.
