We do that with the Pierce County Library system here in Tacoma, WA (as do some of the other Tacoma museums) and it's very popular.

The Library System of Lancaster County (PA) and the Erie County Library System both have museum pass programs. The PHMC sites that participate in their respective counties have been generally pleased with the experience and we are trying to build on the partnerships. The librarians have been real evangelists for the programs as well.

Hi all,

Just gathering some input from the field. Do any of you/your museums currently leave family passes at local libraries to be checked out, used and returned to the library by library patrons? If so, how is this program/partnership working from your perspective?

Subject: REMINDER: Deadline Jan. 15, 2015 - Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize

The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art. Manuscripts should advance the understanding of American art, demonstrating new findings and original perspectives. The prize winner will be given the opportunity to work toward publication in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum's scholarly journal. He or she will also receive a $1,000 cash award and a travel stipend of up to $3,000 to give a presentation in Washington, D.C., and meet with museum staff and fellows. This annual prize is supported by funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Ph.D. candidates and above who have not published in American Art previously are eligible to participate in the competition. Essays may focus on any aspect of historical (pre-1980) American art and visual culture; however, architecture and film studies are not eligible. Preference will be given to submissions that address American art within a cross-cultural context and offer new ways of thinking about the material. A strong emphasis on visual analysis is encouraged.

Submissions for the 2015 prize must be sent to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by January 15, 2015. For more information about eligibility and the format for submissions, please visit www.americanart.si.edu/research/awards/terra<http://www.americanart.si.edu/research/awards/terra>.

Hi Michele,

For better or worse, we use Basecamp: https://basecamp.com/ to manage our projects. There are problems with it but they're improving it all the time. I'm curious to know what others are using.

Hi Cathy,

At one of the museums I've worked at previously, we worked with our local county library system on several initiatives, one of which was our dropping off several laminated Family Passes at the various branches (I think they were mainly held in the children's library reference section, but I could be mistaken on that) which could be checked out by families/library patrons and used to visit our museum. I think that we had set the check out days as

5 days and families checked them out like books, used them (or not) and then returned them for others to check out.

Hope that clarifies,

best,

Keni

Greetings,

Let me give you some perspective from the other side. I am on the board of the Friends of the Irvington Public Library. One of my tasks is the Museum pass program. Our town is a suburb of New York City. Participating cultural institutions are in New York City, Westchester County (the county we are located in) and Connecticut. We have memberships in science centers, sculpture gardens, art museums, natural history museums, history museums and one aquarium. Almost all of these institutions have a special category for Library memberships. The benefits are usually similar to a family membership. Our members borrow the card for three days. Other institutions sell discounted tickets to libraries so that our members pay a reduced rate for entrance. The Museum Pass program is hugely popular with our library patrons. The Friends group believe it is money well spent!

Thanks one and all.

Keni,

We use locked CD cases that are commonly used in libraries as a means for the pass to be durable to hold up over time. Here’s a press release from when we first started the program, complete with a photo of the pass. http://new.pitchengine.com/pitches/3a921cd6-a35c-46ff-8946-4f948f8f3115

The pass is kept behind the check-out desk in the library. I think most of the details are in the press release. The back of the “pass” also spells out the the fine print of the pass.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions,

Learn something new every day…interesting program.

Questions to participating organizations…

· Is the checkout pass program limited to library card holders

(patrons whose taxes support the library or those who may pay for library

privileges) ?

· Can anyone obtain a temp card to access the passes? (non

reciprocal or non residents)

· If a patrons card is blocked, can they still checkout passes?

· Are there overdue fines if passes are returned late?

I’ve always wondered—is there some sort of system that you use to verify this is in fact an eligible family using the card (i.e. someone got the card from the library and gave it to someone else), or is that not really a concern for the museum or the library? If a card is not returned on time, and someone tries to use it past the due date, is the museum notified by the library so that they turn down that card?

I think that we had set the check out days as 5 days and families checked them out like books, used them (or not) and then returned them for others to check out.

Hope that clarifies,

best,

Keni

Keri,

I’m curious as to how the library / museum relationship works with checking out passes. Could you please explain the process?

Thanks,
