Good Day-

I read your request for employee recognition ideas and thought I would
share a couple that I have encountered over the years.

When I was a high school student, I worked at a nursing home that had an
employee of the month vote.  This was held on the payroll distribution day
of the 2nd of 3rd week of the month.  Each employee would cast a vote when
they went to the office to pick up their paycheck.  It was fun because the
employees would chit chat about it as they were waiting in line or casting
their votes.  The winner's name was posted at the same window the following
week.  The name was then added to a plaque in the lobby of the nursing
home.  It would end up involving the visitors and the residents because
they would spot a nametag and would realise that the person had been a
employee of the month at one time or another.

I have also come across a similar system more recently.  This system was
expanded, though, to include granting extra priviledges to the 'winner' as
well as adding their name to a plaque in the lobby.  This particular
employer set aside the first parking space next to the handicapped spaces
for use by the current employee of the month.  The space was even labeled
with a parking sign that read "This Space Reserved For Employee of the Month."

I still smile when I remember my own 'campaigning' as a sixteen year old
kitchen worker!  I was not a wallflower, as you can guess.  I never did
receive one of the awards, but I rationalized that it was only because I
was a part time employee and not enough people were exposed to my wit,
charm and humility.
