Gail,
We do use Fed Ex, in certain instances.  My recommendation is that you do
some pricing.  Often times, an art shuttle like US Art or a freight
company like Pilot is actually cheaper.  I usually send the packages
Express Saver when using Fed Ex.  If you use it, I would encourage you to
do two things: 1) make sure that your work is packed in a crate,
reinforced boxes and/or box within a box and 2) carry insurance wall to
wall through your own insurance carrier.  Claims are impossible with any
of these carriers (UPS, FedEx, etc.), as they will be the first to say
that they are not art shippers.  I've had broken hearts a couple of times
when the above 2 steps were not taken by artists shipping to me.
