Vis-a-vis mercury in fluorescent lamps: I recently saw calculations that
showed that even if everyone dumped their fluorescent bulbs and tubes
directly into land fills, it would still not introduce more mercury into
the environment than the amount that coal-fired power stations would
have to emit in order to generate enough electricity to produce the
equivalent volume of light using tungsten bulbs.
I agree, however, that all fluorescents should be recycled. If each
municipality offered kids ten cents per dead tube or bulb, and allowed
them to smash them in the dumpster too, I think that would do it
nicely.

Ken,

Just one caveat about those high efficiency light bulb replacements
for home and office use. Those bulbs contain mercury and thus require
special disposal as a hazardous material.

I think that a many institutions would make a larger impact by
employing solar energy - I know that several states offer credits that
can cover half the cost of solar installation (I am not sure if this
also applies to institutions). Are there any musuems out there that
have chosen to go with solar? If so, what are the pros and cons?

Cheers!
Dave
