If you are interested in dissertations, Scott Shields recently completed one 
on California artists last year at the University of Kansas.   I haven't 
time to chase down the full title, but you'll find him in Dissertation 
Abstracts.  It's a mighty tome (700+ pages) and knowing Scott, very, very 
thorough.  I'd include it even though it's technically unpublished at this 
time.
