CCAHA RECEIVES GRANT FROM
THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES

The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) has
received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH) in the amount of $203,000. In addition, NEH has offered to
provide matching funds of up to $30,000. This grant makes it
possible for CCAHA to continue its Preservation Overview Survey
Program, and to offer new workshops. The grant program runs from
January 1998 through June 2000.

This grant supports the following activities:

SUBSIDIZED SURVEYS
Preservation Overview Surveys continue at a reduced rate for non-
profit organizations, including libraries, archives, museums,
educational institutions and historical organizations that have
paper-based collections of long-term value to the study and
understanding of the humanities.

PRESERVATION WORKSHOPS
One-day workshops on three different topics:
 - handling architectural materials;
 - managing a mold outbreak; and
 - recovery of water damaged paper-based materials in a disaster
   situation.
In 1998, the architectural records workshop will be presented in
Austin, Texas, in cooperation with AMIGOS Bibliographic Services;
and in New Orleans, Louisiana, in cooperation with the Southeastern
Library Network (SOLINET). The mold and salvage workshops will be
held in 1999 and 2000 at various locations throughout the Mid-
Atlantic region.

Created by Congress in 1965, the National Endowment for the
Humanities is an independent agency that supports education,

humanities.

CCAHA, established in 1977, is a non-profit conservation laboratory
serving other non-profit cultural, educational, and research
institutions as well as private individuals and organizations. The
Center specializes in the treatment of works of art and historic
artifacts on paper, such as prints, maps, posters, historic
wallpaper, photographs, rare books, scrapbooks, manuscripts, and
related materials, such as parchment and papyrus. It also offers
on-site consultation services; educational programs and seminars;
and internships, fellowships, and apprenticeships.
