Dear Colleagues,

The past week has been one of turmoil, confusion, and technological
challenges for many people around the country. AAM has contacted each of the
executive directors of the regional associations, and as of 9/17/01 all six
regional meetings will be held as scheduled.

AAM is still holding the pre-conference workshops, "Evaluating Governance: A
workshop for AAM Peer Reviewers" to be held on Oct. 23rd in Rockford, Ill.
and on Oct. 25th in Wilmington, Del. In addition, we have extended the
registration deadline to September 24, 2001.

This workshop is for peer reviewers, current and new, to learn about aspects
of good governance and assessing governance in a museum setting.

I encourage interested museum professionals to review the information below.
Please contact me with any questions.

Yours,
Karen Topping
Peer Reviewer Manager

"Evaluating Governance" Workshops Available for AAM Peer Reviewers

About Peer Review
Peer review with AAM provides museum professionals with the opportunity to
share their experience, travel, and meet colleagues through the Museum
Assessment Program (MAP) and Accreditation Program. Over the next two years,
AAM, in cooperation with the National Council for Nonprofit Boards, and with
funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, will a workshop
on governance and peer review six times over two years.

Workshop Content
Workshop participants will explore how to assess governance in a museum
setting and learn to identify the characteristics of good governance. This
workshop, offered in conjunction with regional conferences, is useful for
all peer reviewers conducting site visits for Accreditation and MAP,
particularly for those interested in the new Governance Assessment. This
fall, AAM is rolling out the newest MAP Assessment - Governance. To make
this assessment a success, we will need peer reviewers with experience
working with governing authorities and familiar with the unique
characteristics of the Governance Assessment.

Workshop Details
Two workshops will be held this fall in conjunction with the annual meetings
of the Association of Midwest Museums/Illinois Association of Museums (Oct.
23, Rockford, Ill.) and the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (Oct. 25,
Wilmington, Del.). Future workshops are scheduled at the 2002 AAM Annual
Meeting in Dallas and the 2003 AAM Annual Meeting in Portland, Oreg. In fall
2002, workshops will be held in cooperation with annual meetings for the
Southeastern Museums Conference and the New England Museum Association.

Registration
The registration deadline for the fall 2001 workshops is Sept. 24. Workshops
are free and lunch will be provided; participants must pay for their own
travel and accommodations. Current peer reviewers can register by completing
the online form (www.aam-us.org) and submitting it to: Karen Topping, Peer
