Preservation Services has space available in three classes that can help
your staff respond to disasters and limit the loss of collection
materials.  Developing A Disaster Plan, Attack of the Giant Mold Spore:
Mold Remediate for Cultural Institutions, and Disaster Preparedness will
help you prepare for and mitigate events that can cause loss and damage.


*****************DEVELOPING A DISASTER PLAN******************

To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, institutions need
knowledgeable staff and written plans for dealing with emergency
situations so that fewer disasters occur and damage is minimized.  This
web-based class is designed to support the work of an institution's
disaster planning committee.  Homework assignments will require input
and support from a variety of staff members.  

The modules cover:
*Establishment of a planning structure
*Risk Assessment
*Resource list development
*Setting recovery priorities
*Recovery procedures
*Plan development
*Working with disaster recovery vendors

Intended Audience:
This class is designed for staff responsible for organizing, writing,
and implementing an institution-wide disaster preparedness plan in
academic, public, and special libraries as well as archives and
historical societies.

Location and Time:  April 28, 2005 with mandatory follow-up sessions on
May 12 & May 26, 2005.  Sessions are from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Cost:  $155 for SOLINET members, $225 for non-members.  Early-bird

******ATTACK OF THE GIANT MOLD SPORE: MOLD PREVENTION AND REMEDIATION
FOR CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS******
 
This full-day class provides a general introduction to mold and its
impact on library, museum, and archival collections. Through lecture and
discussion, the class examines:

*Understanding mold
*How to avoid an outbreak
*Appropriate mitigation and eradication treatments *Current standards
for mold remediation *Recent insurance claim problems *Protecting staff
and patrons

Several approaches to cleaning mold will be covered:

*Organizing your cleaning efforts
*Simple, safe techniques for mold removal, including the use of HEPA
vacuums *Avoiding the use of most chemicals *Working with commercial
firms - developing contracts and specifications

Intended audience:  Librarians, archivists, curators, registrars, and
those responsible for collections; those responsible for pest control at
the facility; physical plant or housekeeping staff; professionals
interested in expanding their field of expertise; commercial firms
interested in expanding their expertise in the field. 

Location and Time:  May 4th, Georgia Tech Main Library - Ferst Room,
Atlanta, GA, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

***********DISASTER PREPAREDNESS***************
 
Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters. To
prevent unnecessary loss of materials, librarians and archivists must be
prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies.
This requires that institutions have knowledgeable staff and written
plans for dealing with emergency situations, so that fewer disasters
occur and damaged materials can be salvaged successfully.  

This one-day class will provide the training necessary to plan,
organize, and execute a disaster plan and a salvage operation. In
addition to in-depth discussion on the disaster planning process, there
will be demonstrations of salvage techniques, including: 

*Air-drying books
*Rinsing books
*Separating and drying manuscripts
*Drying photographic materials
*Wet packing
 
Intended audience: This class is designed for staff members responsible
for, or interested in, organizing and implementing institutional or
cooperative disaster preparedness and response procedures. 

Location and Time:  May 13th, Virginia Historical Society, Richmond, VA,
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
			  May 20th, Vanderbilt University, Nashville,
TN, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Cost: $145 for all SOLINET members and $185 for non-members.  Early bird
