Do you believe that inquiry-based learning is the most effective way to reach audiences at your museum? The article “Engaging Immigrant Audiences in Museums,” in the current issue of the Museums & Social Issues journal, challenges this assumption that many in the museum field currently hold. In their examination of what the complex term “immigrant” actually means, and of the unique experiences of U.S. immigrants, the article's authors found that one size does not fit all in terms of learning perceptions and preferences. Deep-rooted traditions in some (but not all) immigrant communities value a didactic approach – critical information for museums attempting to engage those audiences.

This is just one of the many surprising and important revelations based on the authors' careful research and analysis that compel us to think differently and critically about our practice.
