I don't have a Theatre backgound myself, but I used to hire interpreters for
Historic Parks and looked for people with dramatic experience and education
as well as for those with teaching and history. I found the drama students
able to learn the information very quickly, and knew how to reach visitors
and present information without sounding like a lecture or a classroom.
Perhaps interpretation would be a better back up occupation for struggling
actors than waiting tables?

I'm guilty, although technically now I do work for a museum
                association.

I am a former theatre person myself, and am curious to hear
how
many other people have made the transition from the world of
drama to the world of museums.
