There was a book that came out approximately 1990 called "Sleeping
Beauty: Memorial Photography in America" by Charles Hansen.  It's out of
print, and can be found on various internet bookfinders- it's a bit
expensive but a really good resource for the practice of photographing
the newly deceased in the nineteenth century- perhaps your local
university library may have a copy?
