Storing cars indoors requires some special care and preparation. At
minimum, drain the fuel tank and run the motor until the gasoline is
consumed from the fuel lines and carburetor(s). Lubricant should be kept in
the transmission, motor, and axles if possible to prevent corrosion and
seals from drying up. If leaks occur, however, draining the offensive
reservoir may be the only option, especially if a drain pan catching the
drips would be unsightly (not to mention a fire hazard) Disconnect, and if
possible, remove the battery from the vehicle (you might replace it with a
dummy). If the car is ever to be driven again after long periods in
storage, consider changing the brake fluid to silicone (DOT 5) fluid, as it
doesn't draw moisture from the air like regular brake fluid (DOT 3) thereby
causing internal corrosion of the brake system. After all that, pray,
because you're never going to get all the flammable fluids out of a car,
short of disassembling and cleaning it completely.

Thanks Maeve for raising this.
We just made our first purchase of a vehicle as well, though it's more as
an installation art - we have to deal with similar issues as we'll be
treating the vehicle as a static museum display. We considered draining the
jeep off its fluids too; but looks like there might be more to doing this?
Look forward to advices on this one.

Thanks!

Hello, please excuse the cross-posting on listserves.

Does anyone have experience purchasing/storing cars for their museums?
My organization has recently purchased one (a lovely 1948 Sheriff's car)
and, as this is our first car, we'd appreciate any tips or suggestions.
Do we need to register the car as well as transfer the title even though
we won't be driving it? Also, we are planning on draining the car of all
of its fluids - is this something that most garages can do or do we need
to find a specialized company?

Thank you for all of your help!

Maeve
