Ship model conservation course: Understanding techniques for research and conservation

The Rijksmuseum, with support from partners such as the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, the Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum of the Netherlands), and the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Arts, and Science (NICAS), is pleased to announce a 4-day course entitled Ship models: Understanding techniques for research and conservation at the Rijksmuseum Atelier building in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
  
Topics explored will include (but are not limited to):

Optical and digital microscopy
Ultraviolet (UV) light spectroscopy
Infrared (IR) reflectography
Polynomial texture mapping/Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI)
Interactive photogrammetry (“3D” computer modelling)
X-radiography (X-ray) imaging
Endoscopic examination
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy
Destructive sampling
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
Identification of samples: wood identification, fibre identification
Dating possibilities: dendrochronology and Radiocarbon (C-14) dating.
 
The course will include combination of informative presentations, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations and will be given by an inter-institutional and multidisciplinary team of conservators, curators, and scientists. It will be illustrated by ship models from the Navy Model collection of the Rijksmuseum and the vast collections of the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. Participants will be introduced to the importance and potential of object-based research of ship models and learn about a range of analytical techniques that may be of particular use during the research, examination, and conservation of ship models. As a result, participants will gain first-hand experience about the possibilities and limitations of scientific analysis and gain a better understanding of which questions can potentially be answered by particular research and analytical techniques. The language of course will be English.

The cost attending the course will be €450 (incl. VAT) and will include coffees, lunches, tours, and a social programme.

This course is intended for institutional researchers, curators and conservators. Due to intensive and practical nature of the course, only a limited number of available spots will be offered (maximum 15). Therefore, we ask that interested participants submit a short statement of motivation including their name, contact information, job title, institutional affiliation, and a brief summary explaining how participating in this course will benefit you and your institution’s collections (maximum 350 words). Participant statements will be reviewed as they are received and participants will be accepted on a rolling basis until the course is full. We are pleased to announce that we will also be offering a € 400 award to one current or recent graduate student who can demonstrate a particular interest in this field. To apply for the special rate of € 50, please send a short letter of introduction demonstrating your interest, some of your previous experiences, how participating in this course will benefit you and your future aspirations (maximum 750 words). Preference will be given to European citizens. Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis until the award is granted.
