"Of course we are breaking the terms of the agreement. And some of the stuff
we're more than happy to return, but is there any other way to solve this
problem without returning the object or putting it on display and keeping
the donor happy ?"

Well, you could write the donor a letter asking that they sign a new gift agreement. I have done this when the original gift agreement has been lost, or is inadequate, and many people are flattered that you took the time to run them down. There is always the possibility that by raising the issue, you may find a donor who wants the object back.
