Dear Ms DeAngelis and Colleagues,

I would like to explain that the UK PhD (Latin: philosophiae
doctor) and DPhil (doctor of philosophy) degrees do not have
particular differences in its quality. Both degrees are given to
successful doctorate researches normally except faculties such
as law or medicine. Using either of those terminologies depends
on a university. For example, Oxford University, Ulster
University and Sussex University use "DPhil"; my University,
Cambridge University and many other UK universities "PhD". It is
said that "PhD" is being comparatively more used in the UK.

Also, the MPhil (master of philosophy) is an individual degree
itself. However, students pursuing for PhD/DPhil should register
for MPhil at the first year in general. They can apply to
transfer to PhD/DPhil after one year of MPhil registration if
they are successful through some types of examinations such as
an oral examination, presentation and written work.

Best wishes,

Jongsok KIM
