The Tech Museum of Innovation
Position Available
GRANTS MANAGER

The mission of The Tech Museum of Innovation is to serve as an educational
resource that engages people of all ages and backgrounds in exploring and
experiencing technologies affecting their lives, and to inspire young
people to become innovators in developing technologies of the future.

The Grants Manager is an exempt position reporting to the Vice President,
Development. The Grants Manager is responsible for all aspects of
foundation and government grant development, management, and administration
-- including cultivation, proposal development, and grants administration
and reporting. The Grants Manager may also assist with corporate and
individual grant development as needed. The main job functions include
developing strategies for prospects, gathering information from appropriate
departments such as exhibits and education, writing the proposals,
preparing budget documentation, delivering requests to granting agencies,
following up with requests, and preparing reports once grants are received.
An important part of successful achievement of goals will be strategizing
with development staff on the appropriate volunteers to engage in
successful cultivation and solicitation of foundation prospects. Donor
research also will be handled through the Grants Manager as possible
utilizing Board resources, volunteers, interns and consultants.

RESPONSIBILITIES
-Be knowledgeable of The Tech's mission, exhibits, programs and long-range
plans and stay current with the functioning of the entire institution.
-Develop strategies to achieve foundation and government grant goals for
the Annual Fund for Education (programs and general operating) and special
Campaign initiatives, including Endowment.
-Strategize short and long term national and regional approaches for
development of increased foundation support.
-Prioritize proposal submissions relative to specific funding
opportunities, potential for success, and potential return on investment.
-Manage all solicitations to foundation and government entities. This
includes research on foundations, proposal development process in
coordination with relevant museum staff, budget preparation, drafting
and revising grant application, and submission of the final proposals.
-Develop relationships through correspondence, conversations, meetings
and other suitable means with grants officers and other appropriate
contacts (such as corporate government relations staff) to encourage new,
continued and increased funding.
-Arrange meetings for President, Vice President for Development and other
key staff to meet with senior grants officers of foundations, throughout
the Bay Area and nationally, to gain understanding of The Tech’s mission
and to seek increased support.
-Maintain records to prioritize foundation actions, proposal submissions,
and reports. Track all required reports and deadlines for funded projects,
and assist staff in maintaining evidence of successful completion of
project objectives. Maintain ongoing records of proposal deadlines, pending
requests and future submissions.
-Develop strategies for prospect and donor research in collaboration
with development staff and volunteer fundraisers, as appropriate.
-Oversee prospect and donor research activities, utilizing volunteers,
interns and consultants.
-Disseminate information to Development and Museum staff, as well as Board
and volunteers as appropriate.
-Recruit and oversee freelance grant proposal writers and researchers for
specific projects and to handle overload grant proposal activity.
-Develop and maintain professional skills and relationships with peers.
-Develop Tech staff awareness of funders' expectations and assist in
planning operations improvements to better position The Tech as a
desirable recipient of grants. Areas of consideration include:  diversity,
research and evaluation, and standards required to become accredited.
-Work as gallery floor staff on assigned week days, weekend days or
holidays (approx. 7 times annually).

QUALIFICATIONS
-Bachelor's degree or equivalent; Master’s degree a plus.
-Excellent research, analytical, writing and communication skills.
-Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
-Knowledge and understanding of budgets and financial information.
-Ability to work with highly confidential information in a fast-paced
environment.
-Proven experience with grant development and administration and prospect
research.
-Ability to work independently and creatively while functioning as part
of the development and overall Museum team.
-Proficient word processing, database and Internet research skills
required.  Cross-platform computer experience (Windows, Macintosh, and
DOS) preferred.  Experience with Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge, FileMaker Pro,
Word and Excel is desirable.
-An interest in science, technology, and education; experience or
training in any related field is desirable.
-Willingness to work one weekend day of every other month and
availability for occasional evening events.
