CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT:  "Scientific Analysis for Art's Sake"
                          Saturday, November 8, 1997
                          Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library

On Nov. 8, 1997, museum scientists and conservators from
Winterthur Museum, Getty Institute, Smithsonian Institution, &
Philadelphia Museum of Art will present scientific techniques used in
object conservation and authentication.  The inspiration for this
conference is a newly-opened exhibition at Winterthur, "Deceit, Deception,
and Discovery."  The exhibition examines fakes and forgeries of art
objects and presents techniques used to determine authenticity.
