Dear Colleagues, I'm writing to you today as Co-Chair of the Program
Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums Annual Meeting.
This year's meeting -- Museums Meet the Collaboration Challenge -- will
be held in Newark, New Jersey, October 11-15, 2003. We encourage you to
share your collaborative initiatives with the museum community in the
Mid-Atlantic region.

Additionally, MAAM leadership recognizes the need to address nuts and
bolts issues, current trends, and hot topics at the annual meeting.
Proposals do not have to address the meeting theme and MAAM encourages
the entire community-including museum consultants, vendors and
independent museum professionals-to submit proposals about issues
relevant to the community. While many sessions will be delivered in the
traditional panel format during the meeting, MAAM encourages presenters
to consider alternative delivery formats and venues (i.e., local
museums) to help augment the diversity of learning experiences presented
at the MAAM meeting. The deadline for submitting proposals is February
14, 2003.

More information and a proposal form can be found at the MAAM website:

MAAM ANNUAL MEETING
Newark, New Jersey . October 11-15, 2003

No one institution, nor for that matter, no one sector, has a monopoly
on ideas, solutions and strategies. Working together we can better
clarify our responsibilities and missions and advance the nation's
social agenda.
-Vartan Gregorian, President, Carnegie Corporation, New York

Museums collaborate-they partner with libraries, obtain support from
businesses, develop programs with schools and work collaboratively with
other nonprofits and government organizations. For many years, the
relationships between the private, public and nonprofit sectors were
based on charitable solutions. More recently, all three sectors have
created relationships that extend far beyond a grantor-grantee
arrangement. And all three sectors benefit from and understand that
these relationships help the communities they seek to engage and serve.

Businesses may collaborate to increase brand recognition in a community,
to expand corporate values, to engage in community service, to enhance
credibility, to improve government relations, to gain access in new
areas of research and development, and to motivate employees and provide
them opportunities to volunteer. At all levels of government, strategic
alliances with the nonprofit sector help the public sector to manage
change, to remain socially responsible in the midst of shrinking
budgets, to adapt new uses of technology, and to embrace a shifting
political landscape.

Around the country, museums enter into strategic alliances with the
public and private sectors to generate new resources, to enable them to
further their missions and outreach efforts, to help them to gain access
to new audiences, and to increase their ability in marketing, strategic
development, and other management areas. A few examples include:

q In 2002, the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance was formed to act
as a catalyst to create a cohesive cultural community that strengthens
the livability and economic vitality of the Greater Baltimore region.

q In 1998, the Whitney Museum of American Art announced a
partnership with Intel Corporation to create an innovative cultural and
technological initiative that enhances the ways in which museum
visitors, students and people in their homes experience and learn about
works of art.

q In 2001, the National Geographic and the Smithsonian Institution
announced a strategic alliance to produce and distribute large-format
films. The Smithsonian and National Geographic have shared a mission of
exploration and education for more than a century.

q The U.S. Department of Education partnered with state
universities, museums, and other nonprofits to help Native American
schools in ten states become more visible and to preserve their cultural
traditions through technology and its integration throughout school
curricula.
