Lisa,

At Wilson House, we handle author appearances on a case by case basis.
However, our preference is to handle all the book sales ourselves. Most
publishers allow book returns, and sometimes free shipping, for author
appearances. You usually have to talk to someone in their promotions
department rather than customer service when ordering.

The author appears as a part of our ongoing lecture series and does not
receive an honorarium. The public pays a fee for the lecture and generally
most will also buy a book although not all. We can count on a few of our
board members to attend and buy as well, they are very supportive. If I
have underestimated and all the books are sold, I have a form for book
orders available and can sometimes arrange with the author to sign them at a
later date if they are local. Its important to have that point clear before
taking any orders so the buyer is not disappointed if I can't get the book
autographed.

I ask the author to sign a few leftover books for our shop if it pertains to
our regular themes.

Subject: Museum shop people

Are there any museum shop people out there who can share their policies with
me - particularly those museums with bookstores and how you handle authors
who want to have book signings in your museum - what is their obligation,
your costs, etc...

Thanks!
