MUSEUM ADMINISTRATOR:
Leavenworth County Historical Society seeks administrator of historic house
museum in Leavenworth, Kansas.  Full time with some evenings/weekends
required.  Salary and benefits package worth $21,000.  Position available
May 1st, 1999.

QUALIFICATIONS  Required:  Bachelor's degree in history along with knowledge
of museum procedures and practices.   Preferred: MS in museum studies.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

POSITION OBJECTIVES:  To promote the mission of the
Leavenworth County Historical Society.  The mission of the Society is "..to
discover, preserve and share as much accurate information as possible about
the County of Leavenworth.  We encourage pride in the achievements of
Leavenworth Pioneers who made significant contributions to the conquest of
the West and the building of a united nation.  We strive to develop
educational programs to promote the County of Leavenworth in such a way as
to create national and international interest in the most historic region of
Kansas."

DUTIES:
To oversee the day to day activities of the Carroll Mansion Museum.  These
activities include:  supervising and training of the staff, ensuring the
museum is open to the public during posted hours,  approving supply
purchases, supervising the upkeep of the museum's physical plant and
grounds.
Responsibility for the society's collections.  This involves supervising the
activities of the cataloging committee, which is responsible for the
acquisition, accession, cataloging and storage or display of items accepted
by the society for the museum or archival collections.
Responsible for the coordination and scheduling of benefit events.  Benefit
events are events held by the Historical Society to raise money for the
on-going activities of the Society.
Responsible for making presentations to groups that request educations
programs from the society.
Responsible for the recruitment and training of museum volunteers.
Responsible for writing grants to obtain federal, state, local or other
funding for special projects such as the cataloging and preservation of the
Everhard photo collection.
Responsible for coordinating the development of new educational programs.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  The administrator is expected to be the Society's
ambassador.  This includes working closely with community groups,
corporations, and governmental bodies.  The administrator is expected to be
involved in local decisions concerning historic buildings and events.
Cooperation with other local history groups is expected and encouraged.

SUPERVISION: The administrator is responsible for the supervision of the
assistant administrator, weekend administrator, and volunteers.

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:  The administrator is responsible for overseeing
the budget of the Historical Society and Museum.  This includes preparing
the proposed annual budgets, requesting funding from Leavenworth County and
making monthly budget reports to the Board of Directors.
