The other day someone at the museum asked if I would send them a copy of
my 5 rules for e-mails. It appears from some of the e-mails on this
thread that I should share my 5 rules with the List-Serve. So FYI, here
they are.
Wesley's 5 rules for e-mails are simple:
1.)  use e-mails for transmitting information about meetings and events;
2.)  use e-mails for sending attachments of budgets sheets, reports,
memos, detailed instructions, plans...etc....;
3.)  use e-mails for cheerleading and thanking people;
4.)  NEVER use e-mails for negative messages or even "semi-negative"
messages -- do that in private, preferably face-to-face;
5.)  use e-mails to send funny pictures (remember my Thanksgiving Dog
and Cat) when appropriate (Holidays, need for levity, etc).

P.S. If you haven't seen my Thanksgiving Dog and Cat photograph, you
will have to wait until Thanksgiving 2006.  I will e-mail it to the
museum staff then - again, as I do every Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, I am not currently in the museum field,
but the list keeps me on my toes, and offers the
chance to help others out (even in repetetive
occurances).

However, back in the day when I was in the field, I
accidently misread an email, and publicly reacted
which ventured into a minor flame war.  This
eventually led to my discovery of my misread.  It
caused me a lot of embarrassment and an apology, of
course.

I'm not sure about others, but I am in the habit of
skimming a lot of the material that comes through my
inbox and its gotten me into warm water on several
occasions.  I think the big lesson is to re-read
thouroughly.
