I would second the comments about UPS (and Fedex).   If you understand what
they do and how they work and pack the artwork accordingly (my standard line
is "pack as if it will be dropped 6 feet off the back of a truck onto the
pavement)then "common carriers" can work very well. But you do have to put
the money into the packing.

Having said that, the NY to Milwaukee route is probably on at least one fine
art shipper's shuttle run (these are trucks the run on a pre-set schedule
between major cities and provide the same air-ride climate-controlled
specialized handling for a lower cost).   Try USArt (1-800-872-7826),
Atelier 4 (718 875-5050) and ArtWorks of Kansas City (800 481-9856) for
their schedules.
