Thank you to all who offered help on my "hypothetical" problem.

For the sake of simplicity, I may have given an unnecessarily grim picture
of the situation. The board, I'm sure, was unaware of the arrangement. The
director is quite reasonable and willing to listen, but was probably
unaware of the issues involved when he made the deal. Like the board, his
expertise and wisdom are great, but unfortunately don't include much
background in museum matters. No one is born knowing things like this; we
all have to learn it somehow.

The situation is well on its way to being solved, out there in hypothetical
land. I forwarded snips of several of your responses to the new employee,
which was far easier and more effective than having to play the bad guy
myself. We will meet to work out an alternative to the arrangement that
will not involve taking pieces from the collection. The director has
resigned since I posted the question, for completely unrelated reasons.
