Archivist/Oral Historian

The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington is seeking an
archivist/oral historian.  Primary responsibilities will be processing a
major corporate collection and implementing an oral history program for the
Society.  Specifically:

· Arrange, describe, and catalog a major corporate manuscript and photograph
collection
o Prepare finding aid using established archival principles and standards
o Conduct research as necessary for historical and biographical data
o Prepare promotional materials for public and/or educational purposes
o Perform basic preservation care on collection

· Create and implement an oral history program for the Society
by establishing and creating an archival oral history project including
guidelines for conducting of interviews, identification of equipment,
policies and procedures for collection, transcription, retention, and access
to interviews.

Other responsibilities will include:

· Oversee other archival projects in the Society’s collections and assist in
developing a long-term processing plan for the Society’s collections
· Create opportunities to share the Society’s collections and oral histories
with the public; assist with museum exhibits, publications, and other public
programs
· Train and supervise volunteers and interns in archival and oral history
projects
· Assist in applying for funding and grants as necessary for archival,
preservation, and oral history projects
· Undertake other special projects and duties assigned by JHSGW Executive
Director
Requirements for this fulltime position include: strong interpersonal skills
and ability to work independently and prioritize tasks; ability to work well
in a team environment; commitment to preserving and interpreting local
Jewish history; excellent written and oral presentation skills.   Candidates
should exhibit knowledge of archival principles and practices and have a MLS
degree or graduate degree in history; experience in conducting oral
histories is a plus.  This is not an entry level position—experience is
required.  Candidates with a knowledge of Washington and/or American Jewish
history are preferable.
Position is fulltime with a good benefit package.
