Summer Intern Program 2002


General Information:  Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will fund
fourteen paid internship positions in state parks across the state.  These
are ten week positions which will expose the interns to the skills and
activities required in managing the facilities and activities in natural
areas, recreational and historical parks. The following description will be
specifically for the Battleship TEXAS museum at the San Jacinto State
Historic Site which is located in a suburb of Houston, Texas.

Job Description & Duties for the Battleship TEXAS:  The summer intern will
assist in the Curatorial Department of the Battleship TEXAS museum in a
wide variety of tasks.  He or she will work with the Collections Manager
for the majority of time, but will frequently aid the Museum Curator and
the ship’s Restoration Planner.  The intern will concentrate on projects
that assist the Collections Manager in updating collection management
methods previously used in the museum in order to conform to current
professional standards.  He or she will at various times accession and
catalog donations; organize storage spaces; contact donors; enter museum
object information into the collections database program Re:Discovery;
assist in making display items such as faux food; research various
historical topics and plan and install exhibits.

Summer Project Description:  He or she will search the historic photos in
the museum’s archives for dated views of the exterior and interior of the
Battleship TEXAS. The photos will be then be scanned, reproduced and placed
into an album or chart demonstrating each known physical change to the ship
and the date that the alterations were made. This photographic dateline
will be a valuable tool in dating previously undated items of all types in
the museum’s collection and a real aid in planning the physical restoration
of the ship and interpreting its history.  As a secondary benefit of the
project, the original photographs will be stored properly in archival
storage and organized for easy retrieval.

Skill Requirements: The intern should be able to work independently and
with others.  He or she should be interested in pursuing a career in the
history museum field and should be preparing for that career by majoring in
history, museum studies or a closely related field in college. The ability
to use a computer is essential.

Job Training:  The intern will work closely with and be trained by the
battleship curatorial staff to learn current professional museum collection
methods such as numbering objects, nomenclature, proper handling of
artifacts, data entry and retrieval methods, collection storage and the
preparation and execution of exhibits and display.  He or she will become
familiar with a variety of collections management literature. Texas Parks
and Wildlife’s Collection Policy and Management Manual, The Revised
Nomenclature For Museum Cataloging and The New Museum Registration Methods
are three of the most essential.

Housing Information: A campsite within the park is available with full hook-
up utilities at no cost to the intern who either owns or rents a
recreational vehicle.  There are also a number of budget-priced, extended-
stay hotels within 10 miles commuting distance of the park. The City of La
Porte is approximately 10 miles east of the park and Deer Park is
approximately 6 miles west.

Other Information:  The intern will be working on an 87 year old battleship
that is berthed on the Houston Ship Channel and is surrounded by chemical
plants. The working conditions are unusual and people who have breathing
problems or are claustrophobic might want to consider these facts.
