Pomerantz Scholarships Available
This five-day intensive course is based on research conducted by the
instructors in collaboration with research chemists, and funded by the
University of Arizona Office of the Vice President and the National Center
for Preservation Technology and Training in 1996. The interdisciplinary
research has resulted in the development of a range of testing protocols
specifically to the needs of conservators. The publication Material
Characterization Tests for Art and Archaeology is the basic course
manual. Conservators and other researchers often must characterize the
material nature of artifacts, accretions or deposits, and contextual
materials. Spot tests that do not require expensive instruments or
specialists participation can be particularly useful, provided they are
accurate, complete, capable of interpretation, and minimally intrusive. The
class will combine lecture and laboratory sessions for hands-on practicum
in preparation, testing, and interpretation of results for a representative
range of the organic and inorganic materials tests covered by the
directory.
Please Note: Thanks to an endowed scholarship fund established by the Louis Pomerantz Institute, a limited number of scholarships for the refresher courses will be available to conservators in private practice.

The Campbell Center is a mid-career training facility for professionals in
the Historic Preservation, Collections Care, and Conservation fields.
Located in Northwestern Illinois, on the campus of the former Shimer
College, the Center is about 3 hours west of Chicago. Shuttle service is
available from Rockford, Illinois. Bus connections are available from
Chicago's O'Hare airport to Rockford. Details are available from the
Campbell Center.
