The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University seeks an experienced
professional and accomplished scholar to serve as Curator of African Art
for its preeminent collection of sub-Saharan African art. The ideal
candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Art History or a related field, have at
least 5 years of curatorial experience in an accredited museum, and a
record of successful exhibition projects and publications.

The Carlos Museumıs collection of African art consists of over 1,000
objects, the majority of which are masks and carved figures from West and
Central Africa, particularly the numerous cultures of Nigeria, Benin
(formerly Dahomey), the Cameroon Grassfields, and the Democratic Republic
of the Congo. Since 2003 the African collection has grown through select
acquisitions and gifts to represent objects from East and Southern Africa,
including textiles, ceramics, and jewelry.

The Curator of African Art reports to the Director, serves on a team of
highly skilled collections, education, and administrative staff, and
provides leadership for cross-departmental collaboration. The Curator of
African Art develops and presents exhibitions, makes acquisitions,
provides stewardship for donors, researches and documents the collections,
develops didactic materials and programming, works with students and
interns, and establishes and maintains strong community and institutional
relationships. The Curator may also teach classes for the Art History
Department or African Studies Program at Emory University.
