We often have the kids do storytelling and illustrating from the artwork in our museum. Representational paintings are powerful story starters with kids - either for writing on their own or groups storytelling.
One activity we use is enter a new world - The child enters a "painting" and desribes what they find using all their senses. Or the child can continue the story (one entered on a road as a skunk and got smashed - lots of description sensory words there!)
Another is to have children draw a place that is hidden from the viewer - under the ground, in a house, behind trees or bushes. That can be a whole other story.
With younger children we take turns adding lines to our story and I have a John Steuart Curry poster that we use for book week, storytelling festivals etc. It always has a tornado!
