Rye Historical Society
Rye, New York

The Rye Historical Society seeks a highly motivated,
organized and creative individual to fill the position
of Curator.  The Rye Historical Society is located in
Rye, New York and operates two historic buildings;
one, an 18th century tavern and inn which functions as
a historic house and the Society’s office and
headquarters; the other, a 17th century farm house
located one mile from the Society’s headquarters which
houses the archive collection and acts as a research
facility.  

The Historical Society maintains a collection of
approximately 8,000 artifacts and 25,000 archive
pieces.  The collection focuses mainly on the history
of the local community.  In addition the Society
maintains an active educational department and mounts
two major and two minor exhibitions each year. 
Currently the Society is in the preliminary stages of
reinterpreting the 18th century tavern and inn which
will also include two permanent exhibits.  

Primary responsibilities include:

Responsibility for the care and interpretation of the
artifact collection which includes proper storage,
documentation, research and exhibition of all
artifacts.  The Curator is also responsible for all
loans, accessioning and deaccessioning,
recommendations for conservation and all necessary
related paperwork.  

Interpretation of the collections through temporary
exhibitions including research, exhibit design,
installation, publications resulting from exhibition
research; assist Educational Curator with development
of exhibit related programs, workshops and curricula;
work with Director in planning long range exhibition
schedule.  

Oversee the preservation of the Society’s two historic
properties especially the continued research and
documentation of the buildings and their owners;
supervise the selection and placement of artifacts and
the use of reproductions; responsible for housekeeping
duties in period rooms.  

Work with Archivist to properly document and maintain
the Society’s archival collections and to integrate
museum and archive procedures.  The Curator will
assist the Archivist in the inventory of the Archives
projected to be completed by the end of 2005.

Train and supervise volunteers and interns who are
assisting with registrarial functions including care
of collections, exhibition preparation or any other
collections related area to which they may be
assigned. 

Knowledge of PastPerfect software, Microsoft
Publisher, Adobe Photoshop and Pakemaker, and
Dreamweaver.  

Grant writing experience a plus!

Requirements: 

Candidates must be highly organized, efficient and
creative.  BA in history, material culture, art
history required, MA preferred.  Candidates should
have previous experience working in a museum setting
with knowledge of colonial American history.  One to
three years of museum experience preferred.
