Like it or not, in today's culture non-ear piercings and visible body
tattoos code for rebelliousness and deliberate nonconformity.  (although
if everybody does it, how can it be nonconformist?)  If someone chooses
to be pierced and tattooed these days s/he should expect to be branded
as rebellious and nonconformist by most people who choose not to do so.
But the P&T person should not expect these others to ignore the Ps and
Ts--why do something permanent in a visible area unless one expects to
be stared at?  Yeah, "personal expression," but frankly, I cannot think
that someone would be so disingenuous as to believe that a visible
tattoo could be meaningless or not affect how s/he is seen by others.
