DIRECTOR, MIT MUSEUM

The MIT Museum was founded in 1971 to collect, preserve and exhibit
material related to the intellectual, educational and social history of MIT
and MIT's role in the history of modern science and technology. The Museum
houses three permanent collections -- the MIT Historical Collections (which
are particularly strong in aeronautics and astronautics, architecture,
computer science, chemistry, engineering, health science, and physics); the
Hart Nautical Collections; and the Holography Collections. The Museum
encompasses approximately 15,000 square feet of exhibition space and
attracts approximately 20,000 visitors annually. The operation also
includes a Museum Shop, with both catalog and retail sales.

The Director administers all aspects of the MIT Museum. Responsibilities
include developing a long-range strategic plan for the Museum; establishing
and implementing policies for the care and management of the Museum's
collections; strengthening the Museum as a resource for scholarly research;
planning exhibitions and educational programs that are relevant both to the
MIT community and to general audiences, including schools in the
metropolitan Boston area; providing financial management; fundraising;
managing a dedicated curatorial and administrative staff; and working
closely with the Museum's Advisory Board.

Candidates should be entrepreneurial and capable of providing strong
leadership. They should hold an advanced degree and have significant
museum experience, especially in curating exhibits and in the use of new
technologies.

Applications, including a letter, a cv, and the names of references, should
be sent by October 15 to:
