Couldn't the backpacks be created for just about any type of museum?  At the museum I worked at, we created a small booklet for the children (mainly school age) to use.  There were several activities such as locating the items pictured, writing down their names, which room they were located in, a word game, and other such.  It kept the school tours active, and it also gave the teachers something to talk with the students about after the tour was over.

Nature backpacks sound like the would work wonders in a natural history museum.
