Hello Cheryl,

We recently did an evaluation of our Kelp Forest Feeding Program, a live program where a diver is in the tank feeding the fish while a live interpreter is outside talking to the audience. Both people have microphones and interact with the audience. We included a control group who didn't see the program as well as making a comparison between a few different interpreters (the content they covered and delivery varied more than we expected). The evaluation looked at to what extent the interpreter used three messages (emotional connection, balance of nature, and personal responsibility) and how these affected visitors' views of the Kelp Forest habitat. The article was published in Visitor Studies Today. Knowing where you work, I'm pretty sure someone would have a copy of this issue (if not, let me know).

Mortan, S., & Yalowitz, S. S. (2003). Evaluating the kelp forest feeding program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Visitor Studies Today, 6 (1), 6-9.

Hope this helps,

Steve

I am posting this for a colleague of mine, so please reply to him
directly or post to the list. Thanks.

Does anyone out there know of any visitor studies of 1) live
interpretation that examines visitor responses to the interpretation, or
2) live interpretation that compares visitor responses to the same
exhibition with, and without, live interpretation? By live
interpretation, I mean an interpretation in which a person facilitates,
as in a tour, demonstration, activity cart, or 1st or 3rd person
interpretation. I am always interested in museum theatre, so although
not my primary focus at this time, I would welcome information there as
well.=20

I would appreciate any citations, or if available, electronic copies or
web links to the studies.

You can send any responses directly to me or to the list. =20

Thanks much for your help.=20
