Seeking Babe Ruth!

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is planning an exhibition One Life: Babe Ruth opening June 24, 2016 and we are hoping to locate a portrait of Babe Ruth by Paul Lewis Clemens, oil on canvas, 1939. An image is available of the work, Museum-L posts don't allow for imbedded images, so please contact us.

This painting of “The King of Swat” captures the energy Ruth put into every swing – turning him into a tornado of power – and we would love to include it in our exhibition.

Background history: The National Portrait Gallery borrowed this painting for an exhibition in 1981 from a private owner in Bellevue, Washington. Its next known location was at the Adamson Duvannes Galleries, Los Angeles, California in 1995. Its last known location was as décor in an office in Los Angeles in 1997. The owner sold the work sometime thereafter but does not recall to whom, so any help in locating this painting would be greatly appreciated.

If you know the whereabouts of this painting, or have any clues to its history between 1997 and today, please contact Beth Isaacson at 202-633-8282 or [log in to unmask]
