Dear Margaret Bruener and Other Interested Folk:

I am likewise a graduate student in NYC (Ph.D. program in Public History at
The Union Institute while simultaneously in New York University's post
graduate Museum Studies Program). I'm in the midst of my second internship
and am interviewing currently. Most of my referrals come from faculty with
whom I've worked on projects or have befriended. I also worked part-time as a
museum administrator (a lucky break) during my studies; it resulted from my
first internship. The cache of the universities and the degree programs have
likewise added points to this game.

Here in the city, finding a decent museum job takes a combination of luck,
help from who you know, and a work history in museums. There is so much
competition in this town that a degree isn't an automatic door opener
(everybody has a degree here). I'm in the second round of interviews for a
great job (I can't say where). The first interview was a product of my
connections, the good fortune of having pieced together some good work
experience, the power of my degree granting institutions, and a clever resume.
