Let's not quibble eh? Sure you can find cheap places to live in practically any big city but would you want to live in them? Most places I know in the DC area that are that cheap are at least 45-1 hour commute from anywhere in insane traffic. Thus the savings from cheap rent is eaten up in gas or metro fares. There are places that you can share for about $500/month a person but those too are also going up rapidly in rent. (I've lived in this area for most of my life and it's changed drastically.)

The point being, regardless of the salary you area making, if you only have a couple hundred dollars extra per month that aren't a part of your basic expenses, you are still pretty much breaking even. One good car repair or doctor's bill and zap, there goes your savings.
