Collection Research and Management Internship

Position Description: Curatorial Assistance needs several interns to
play a crucial role in the digital cataloguing, conservation and
research of a
major photographic collection made by Britain's preeminent Modernist
photographer from 1910 to 1940.

E. O Hoppé (1878-1972) was "the most famous photographer in the world in
the 1920s" whose photographic archives were recently "excavated" from
one
of England¹s oldest picture libraries where the works were interred in
1947. The collection contains the photographer's vintage prints,
negative
log books, various published books and articles both by and about Hoppé.
The archive is in the process of preparing major museum exhibition and
publication projects, including a retrospective at the Barbican Art
Gallery, London, in 2000.

Interns will work with Curatorial Assistance staff with assembly of a
digital archive by combining extant scanned images and a text database
with the goal of making 5,000 to 7,000 items of the collection available
on the world wide web for research purposes and licensing purposes.

Depending on the skill and interests of the individual, the Intern may
also be trained in specialized conservation techniques and the archival
storage of vintage photographic materials.

Company Description: Curatorial Assistance is a museum services
organization specializing in the creation and traveling of art
exhibitions. Curatorial Assistance provides a wide array of museum and
exhibition preparation services including curatorial research,
exhibition design, international exhibition touring, publication design
and publishing, (both in print and electronic media) traditional
photographic art copying and digital imaging and multimedia theater
productions, framing, crating and shipping services. Since 1987
Curatorial Assistance has toured more than 240 contemporary and
historical art exhibitions to major museums, university galleries and
art centers worldwide.

Schedule/Pay: Minimum of 8 hours per week. Schedule may be arranged to
suit individual needs, but we would prefer interns to work two or more
days per week as is possible. Curatorial Assistance office hours are
Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 6:00.
This is an unpaid internship but $10 per day is provided for expenses.

Starting Date: Immediately.
