Our historic site has a $3.00 per adult admission. No discount for Senior
Citizens. (This is probably the "missing" admission fee that is argued about
the most.) Children $2.00. School group children $1.00. An aside to this is
that we ask the teacher to try to get the children to use their own money
and talk about the money being used for preservation at the site.

We have a $7.00 family entrance fee. If there is more than one child this
pays off for the family and even works if there is Mom, Dad and college age
student.

Then we have had families of Grandma, Grandpa, Mom and Dad and any amount of
children and cousins trying to get in for the $7.00. My favorite was an aide
from a mentally disturbed adult home arguing, "we are all one big family"
and pressing for the $7.00 admission. My worse horror story was a day camp
we had scheduled for a tour. They arrived with 95 children and staff. They
volunteered to give us a donation of $50. We had confirmed the pricing to
them on the phone and in our written confirmation. This kind of action is
just trying to take advantage of a small organization. (By the way, we took
the $50. and made a note for next season.)

Our site is small enough that if there is a needy family we will notice that
and we can set aside the admission. I think that if we really had to count
on each admission to support this historic house, we would be in real
trouble. We are lucky that the majority of our visitors pay the admission
price, like our program and contribute above the admission price. The
occasional family that can not afford the fee is therefore covered by
others. And, I think that is the way it should be.
But once again, I am sure there are few of the house museums and smaller
historic sites that are depending on admissions to cover their "nut". The
majority of the monies are donations above the admissions. Agreed?

children?

We have a suggested donation of $5 for adults, $2.50 for children, students
and senior citizens and $10 as a family maximum. We also ask $1 per person
for school tours. I suppose at some point two adults with a whole bunch of
children looks more like a school tour than a family, but we are not
planning to ask for identification. I'd rather have a few people "abuse"
the system than have one parent sit in the car while the other comes in with
the kids, because they can't afford the admission for everybody (and THAT
has happened in the past).
