Both the PEM (and now its later version the PEM2)and the Onset Corp Hobos are excellent loggers each in their own way. The important thing to remember is that each product has its plusses and minuses. The PEM is a high quality logger with many terrific features but it is also twice the price as the Hobo LCD or U-series loggers. I am a huge fan of the IPI Climate Notebook software for the PEMs and like that it is compatible with other logger data - it is an excellent tool. The H8 was an extremely cheap logger and terrific for some applications (e.g. traveling exhibits were loggers could get lost and then you were only out $98) but you cannot expect the same quality from a $100 logger as you can from a $350 unit. The H8 and Hobo Pros were only discontinued because one of Onset's parts suppliers stopped making a component and they could not find a suitable replacement. The U-series loggers though are competitively priced and work very well for many basic monitoring applications.

While you often get what you pay for in dataloggers - expensive isn't always best for all applications. Lots of factors go into choosing the correct logger for your institution and particular monitoring application. I discuss some of the criteria in choosing a logger in the Conserve-O-Gram 3/3 publication available online at

Best,
Rachael
