It's a common, and distressing, choice to make. I would take the full-time
opportunity, especially if you can see a trajectory of movement to
better-paying positions within that field. If it turns out that you can't
stand taking a part-time job with the full-time one, you can always quit
and do something more lucrative.

In terms of more lucrative part-time work, I have two suggestions: go to
sparknotes.com--they sometimes hire people to write Cliff Notes sort of
things. Also, law firms sometimes hire part-time people as
assistant/paralegal types, and that pays pretty well.

By the way, I am also 26 and have a master's in art history. Do you mind
me asking what posiition you're considering? You can contact me on list or
off, or not answer me at all, clearly. But I am curious as to what types
of things are out there.

Good luck!

Dear List:

I am contemplating taking a full-time job that I would enjoy, would learn a
great deal, and would eventually lead to more interesting and lucrative
positions. However, if I took this job I would be making about ½ as much
as
I currently make and would need to take on a part-time job for at least a
year in order to pay my bills. The thought of working retail or
waitressing, the two categories of part-time work that most readily comes
to
mind, does not greatly appeal to me (although I would do either if
necessary). Does anyone have any creative suggestions for interesting
part-time work that pays more than minimum wage?

Just in case, here are some basic facts about me might help you with
suggestions: I live in the Washington, DC area, am 26 years of age, and
have a master's degree in art history and good computer application skills.

In the mean time, I will continue checking the usual job advertisement
sources.

Please feel free to contact me on or off-line. Thank you very much in
advance!

Kate Fritzsche
