The following position is open at the Repatriation Office, National Museum
of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.  This announcement  has been
sent to several lists.

  Salary: $38,330 per annum

Area of Consideration: All candidates may apply, including individuals
with a disability who are eligible under special appointing authority. If a
competitive list of eligibles is requested, the applications of nonstatus
candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position will be
referred to the Delegated Examining Authority (DEU) for consideration.
Status candidates who wish to be rated under both merit promotion and
competitive procedures must submit two complete applications (If only
one application is received, it will be considered under the merit
promotion program).

Duties: Supervises repatriation documentation laboratory and the capture
of biological information from collections of human remains being
assessed for possible repatriation.  Develops, monitors, and insures that
standards for data capture are met.  Adjusts existing procedures to meet
emerging needs in the Museum's repatriation documentation laboratory.
Serves as a primary source of information on the documentation and
assessment of biological affiliation of physical anthropology collection
impacted by repatriation.  Provides an assessment of the sex, population
affinity, age at death, and other biological attributes that will assist the
Museum in its efforts to relate existing skeletal collections to
contemporary Native American groups.  Presents information to a
diverse group of individuals and organizations on the Museum's policies
and procedures for the assessment of biological affiliation during the
repatriation process.  Recruits laboratory staff and trains in standard
data collection and the development of procedures to collect data in a
computerized data base.  Identifies contract needs in the repatriation
program and develops and assists the Program Director in contract
management related to physical anthropology documentation.
Qualifications: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or one year of
specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level.  Specialized
experience is experience which has equipped the applicant with the
particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the
duties of the position and which is typically in or related to the work of
the position to be filled.  Three full years of higher level education or
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree may be substituted for experience.

Selective Factors: (Applicants must meet all of these mandatory factors
in order to be considered  qualified to compete for a position.)
1. Skill in the analysis and publication of results in osteology/human
skeletal biology.
2. Ability to manage research laboratory and support staff.
3. Knowledge of computers and database management related to
anthropological research.

Quality Ranking Factors: (These factors are not mandatory to be
considered for a position, but will be used to determine who are the
highest qualified candidates among those who meet the selective
factors.)
1.  Knowledge of the repatriation process and with the biological
assessment of Native American skeletal remains.
2. Knowledge of osteological research/physical
anthropology/archaeology of Native American populations.
3. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with scientists, Native
American, and other groups involved with repatriation and
repatriation-related issues in museums, universities, etc.
