This seems to be a no-win in either direction.  On the
one hand, giving it back MAY help the donor
relationship, though that may well have been severed.

However, reading between the lines, this donor
probably got a tax write-off for his donation.  Giving
it back sets the precedent that gifts are refundable
after the tax refund.

This could be disastrous for nonprofits especially if
the Inheritance Tax is killed.  Less incentives to
give to charity when that happens and, if things
already given can be recalled, it could be a huge
loss.
