Dear Colleagues,

There are opportunities for two Conservation Officers in Surrey, UK: please
do not hesitate to email me for further details. Closing date for recepit
of applications is 15th May, 2001, and interviews will be held 22nd May
2001.

Conservation Job Specification

Two posts are required. One post will be for six months, (f/t Surrey grade
D). The second post is for three months for a fee conservator.
Candidates should be specialists in one of the following: textiles,
archives or metals/wood.

Both post holders will be required to undertake:

· Remedial conservation.
· Training and supervision of student and pre-training interns (three).
· Advice and information provision to museums in Surrey through
outreach, visits, meetings and training provision.
· Formulation and some implementation of collections and
preservation management plans (to include both storage and display).
· Formulation and some implementation of environment and pest monitoring
and control programmes.
· Planning and implementation of preventative conservation plans.
· Provision of advice and training on disaster prevention and
contingency planning.

The postholders are required to enable museums to use and develop the
preservation management and action plans created by this conservation
project and create others as necessary. Working with small museums on
practical solutions will be an important part of the job.

Materials and travel costs will be funded by the project and individual
museums. Conservators and interns may be able to carry out some work within
some museums but it is expected that some remedial work may need to be
carried out in a post-holder's workshop.

It is required that the candidates bring to the interview a portfolio of
recent work to include items such as photographs of treatments,
documentation, relevant reports, management plans, CPD records, relevant
certificates and other work records.

Best wishes to all,

Pat Reynolds
Surrey Museums Development Officer
