University of Leicester Department of Museum Studies
http://www.le.ac.uk/ms

The Department of Museum Studies was established in 1966 to provide
training in the museum sector. Since that time it has grown to become the
world's largest and most noted supplier of learning and research in the
field of museum studies. The Department runs PhD, MA, MSc, Postgraduate
Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate and CPD programmes. Most of these are
available for full-time campus-based study or using the flexibility of
distance learning. It is also home to the Research Centre for Museums and
Galleries, which undertakes research on behalf of museums and other
cultural organisations

RAE 5 and QAA 24/24

The department scores top marks in research and teaching quality
assessments.

Research is a major component of the work of the department. In the recent
Research Assessment Exercise, Museum Studies staff were submitted along
with their colleagues in the departments of Archaeology, History and
Sociology. Overall, the Department of Museum Studies has been rated as
Grade 5 (out of 5).

The Department has been awarded the highest possible score (24/24) for the
quality of its teaching and student support by The Quality Assurance Agency
for Higher Education. See http://www.qaa.ac.uk/revreps/subjrev/all/q338%
5F01%5Ftextonly.htm for full details of the report.

As a pioneer in the development of museum studies, the Department has a
well-established reputation internationally. Offering highly respected and
widely recognised professional and academic museum qualifications, it has
been at the leading edge of museum studies research, training and
professional development for more than 30 years. During its history, the
Department has worked both collaboratively and creatively to ensure that it
has remained relevant and responsive to the needs of the changing
international museum sector. As a result, it offers up-to-date programmes
that encourage critical engagement with museum studies ideas and issues.

All programmes are designed to be student-centred - accessible, inclusive
and flexible to diverse student needs. The Department offers a full suite
of learning opportunities. The Postgraduate Diploma or the Master of
Arts/Master of Science degrees are the most popular for those wanting to
study to either enter the cultural sector or to develop their museum career
further. In addition, the Department also now offers a Postgraduate
Certificate and other shorter study options for people wishing to
participate in continuing professional development. Finally, students who
wish to take their academic and professional studies further can apply to
join the Department's active research community to study for a PhD.

Part-time opportunities- all programmes (Masters, PhD, Postgraduate Diploma
and PGCert) are now available for study on a part time basis through
distance learning.

Full-time opportunities - the postgraduate diploma, Masters courses and PhD
programmes are available for campus based study.

Study for MA/MSc/PGDip in Museum Studies or MA/PGDip in Art Gallery Studies

The Postgraduate Diploma and Masters degree programmes offered by the
Department aim to provide an integrated, up to the minute approach to
creative museum practice. These qualifications are widely recognised and
highly regarded by museum professionals internationally, and in the UK they
carry Cultural Heritage National Training Organisation (CHNTO) validation
and Museums Association recognition. They provide the pre-entry
qualification for those wishing to embark upon a career in the museums
sector or, for those who are already working in the sector, an opportunity
to further advance their careers and develop new knowledge and skills. The
Masters programmes also provide underpinning knowledge for those who wish
to register for a higher degree in museum studies.

These programmes stimulate students to engage critically and creatively
with wide ranging ideas and issues and to develop both philosophical
approaches and the practical methods and skills necessary to become
effective and thoughtful museum and gallery professionals. These
interdisciplinary programmes are student focused and a wide range of
learning styles and approaches are catered for. They are well resourced and
students who register with the Department enter into a dedicated and
supportive learning and research community.
