Valdez sits on the banks of Port Valdez, a beautiful fjord off Prince
William Sound surrounded by majestic glacier clad mountains. The area has a
colorful history of boom and bust cycles including: the gold rush beginning
in 1897; the construction of a town; a small railroad war; the building of a
highway; an earthquake that caused such devastation the entire town was
relocated; the construction of an oil pipeline that stretches longitudinally
across the state and an oil spill that drew world attention. Today, with a
booming tourist industry, Valdez has become a haven for winter and summer
enthusiasts with extreme skiing competitions, ice climbing festivals,
several good hiking trails and great fishing. This year Valdez is
celebrating the Centennial of the its incorporation.
