Washington, DC--For Immediate Release from the Institute of Museum and
Library Services

News Release:

IMLS and Heritage Preservation Announce $819,290 in Grants to 147 Museums
Nationwide for Conservation of Museum Resources

Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and
Heritage Preservation has awarded grants totaling $819,290 to 147 museums
across the country. Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) grants enable
museums, from art to zoo, to conduct essential conservation assessments of
their sites and collections. For a list of recipients in your state, please

CAP grants help museums, especially small ones, establish conservation goals
to ensure their holdings will be available to the public for years to come.
Small museums represent 75% of all museums in the United States. IMLS grants
enable museums to participate in the Conservation Assessment Program and
Heritage Preservation administers the program. Grants support a two-day
visit by conservation professionals who review the museums' collections and
environment and recommend priorities for short and long-term conservation
planning. This year, conservation assessors will provide professional
advice on collections ranging from tall ships, to botanical specimens, to
fine art.

"As a leader in preventative conservation, IMLS is dedicated to helping our
nation's museums protect their collections," said Beverly Sheppard on behalf
of the agency. "According to a recent evaluation of the Conservation
Assessment Program by Bosma and Associates, International, the grants have
had an impact on increasing conservation awareness nationwide. Additionally,
95% of the grant recipients report fulfilling some or most of the of the
conservation assessment recommendations."

"CAP has now helped nearly 2,000 small museums across the United States
receive professional conservation and preservation assistance and move
forward to improve the care of their collections and historic buildings,"
said Heritage Preservation's Larry Reger. "As the Bosma evaluation
demonstrated, without IMLS funding, many of these museums could not afford
to get this essential conservation advice."

CAP awards also help museums leverage funds. As one recipient has said,
"The CAP report has been an invaluable tool for fund-raising--staff and the
Board have made collections care our first priority, and as a result, we
have received several grants to pursue CAP recommendations."
